About the PDF to Text tool
A PDF doesn't really contain lines or paragraphs — it contains glyphs positioned on a page. Getting usable text back out means rebuilding that structure from the geometry, which is why copying out of a PDF reader so often produces a jumble. This tool groups runs into lines, orders them, and then either rejoins paragraphs for reading or preserves the column positions for tables.
The result is a plain .txt file you can search, edit, paste into an email, or feed to another program. Everything is extracted in your browser, so confidential documents stay on your machine.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my PDF coming out empty?+
It's almost certainly a scan — a photograph of a page rather than real text. Extracting needs OCR, which this tool doesn't do. Converting the pages to images with PDF to JPG may be more useful in that case.
What's the difference between the two layout modes?+
Readable paragraphs rejoins lines that belong to the same paragraph, so the text reflows naturally. Keep the page layout pads with spaces so columns line up in a monospaced editor, which suits tables and forms.
Does it keep tables?+
Table text is extracted, and in layout mode the columns stay visually aligned. It is plain text though, so there are no real table cells — for structured data, extracting to text and then re-importing usually works best.
Will hyphenated words be joined back together?+
Yes. In paragraph mode a word split across a line break with a hyphen is rejoined, so "exam-" and "ple" become "example".
Is my document uploaded anywhere?+
No. The text is extracted by JavaScript running in your browser tab, so the file never leaves your computer.
